Chesnut Lodge Specialist School in Widnes took part in the Merseyside Schools Discovery Swimming Challenge event in October – their first time at the event in around eight years.

Teacher Geoff Roberts says it was a fun event, giving some of the school’s less able swimmers a chance to compete.

Over the past decade, Chesnut Lodge – a community special school for pupils aged from two to 16 with complex physical and medical difficulties and/or cognition and learning difficulties – have been part of lots of Panathlon events away from the pool.

“They are really good at providing opportunity for our pupils to compete at a wide variety of events and at a range of different levels,” says Mr Roberts.

“They also provide us with a chance to get our children out into the community and to feel part of something wider than just our school.

“Often the events challenge the pupils in a sporting context, but also personally, testing their determination, resilience, sportsmanship, social, and personal skills.”
