Julie Bassett, teaching assistant at reigning national swimming champions Hempsted School, writes for us about their preparation ahead of next week’s gala…

Last year Hempsted Church of England Primary School attended the Panathlon National Swimming Gala at the Olympic Aquatics Centre in London and came home National Champions. Team Hempsted have been practising for this year’s event that takes place on Tuesday 25th November to try and retain their title.

The children have all been practising for the individual races and the team events which they will be taking part in. This is a relatively new squad with only two children from last year taking part.

For many children, the chance of swimming at the Olympic Aquatics Centre becomes a moment they’ll carry with them for years – one that fuels enthusiasm, builds character, and celebrates the joy of sport. Giving children an opportunity through the Panathlon competitions to compete can inspire our young swimmers to dream bigger, work harder, and believe in their own potential.

Beyond the excitement of the setting, swimming is an excellent way for children to stay active, improve coordination, and develop healthy habits enabling them to grow and thrive. Swimming for children with special needs helps to improve coordination, reduce anxiety, strengthen muscles, and support emotional regulation. Just as importantly, it offers a sense of achievement and the chance to participate in a fun, social activity.

Good luck, Jude, Jessica, Carter, Tilly and Maisie from Team Hempsted – and thank you Panathlon for giving us this opportunity.
