The 2015 East London Panathlon kicked off today as Hackney won the first qualifier at the Britannia Leisure Centre.
Islington finished second to join Hackney in the East London Champions Final, while Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest qualified for the East London Plate Final, on a day that saw a total of 97 students compete.
Despite having a completely new team this year, Hackney put in impressive performances across all events, either winning gold or silver in each.
Islington took gold in the boccia, which included an incredible 6-0 end, while Waltham Forest took gold in the field athletics. A full set of results is available to view.
The closest competition of the day came in the polybat, with a three-way tie between Waltham Forest, Islington and Tower Hamlets. The result went to countback but, amazingly, Waltham Forest and Islington could still not be separated having both scored 39 points in all matches. So head-to-head results were needed to separate the teams, with Islington winning and Waltham Forest taking the silver.
Outstanding individual preformances on the day included Islington’s Kristof and Abdi’s powerchair slalom performances of 33 and 34 seconds, respectively, Ashley from Hackney’s long jump of 2.14m and Conner from Tower Hamlet’s precision beanbag high score of 56.
The East London Finals will take place on Tuesday 17th March. Before then, the second East London qualifier takes place on Thursday 12th February, where four teams will compete to join Hackney and Islington in the Champions Final.
We look forward to seeing all competitors again in the coming months.
