The England National Ten-Pin finals take place in two weeks’ time – on Tuesday 19th May – and New Oscott School will be taking part in Birmingham’s event.

Teaching assistant Lindsey McMahon has been at the school for three decades, and has always had an interest in supporting children with additional needs throughout her career.

“We have run gross motor sessions in the school for many years and have been attending Panathlon competitions for over 12 years,” she says.

“It truly is my most favourite part of my job. The children benefit so much, growing in confidence, ability and understanding of the fun they can have, the successes they can achieve.

“Panathlon really does allow all children of any ability to take part in all kinds of competitions and gain a real understanding of competitions and team playing.”

She says that many of the school’s children have visibly flourished thanks to their involvement in Panathlon – proud to represent their school, and excited to receive medals and certificates in assemblies.

“Suddenly they are representing school and being seen as worthwhile and included, which isn’t always the case for many SEND children in mainstream,” she says.

“A couple of our children have won Panathlon sports person of the year – a fabulous achievement. They have continued because of the support and confidence given by Panathlon to attend other events; one child even won the London Marathon wheelchair race.”

And she adds that parents are grateful to the school for their involvement in Panathlon, giving children an opportunity to join in a variety of events – including a trip to the Olympic Park for swimming!

For now, everyone is focused on the upcoming bowling final, having enjoyed the qualification event.

“We took two teams of six and only two of the children had been bowling before,” recalls Ms McMahon.

“One team came first and the other team did really well. They are super excited for the final.”

And she concludes: “There are so many children in schools across the country that would benefit so much from attending Panathlon events. I personally cannot recommend them enough. My wish would be that every school could attend.”
