Around 100 disabled schoolchildren competed in Round One of the Panathlon Challenge at Westway Sports Centre on 23 January with teams competing from Camden, Islington and Westminster.
Team Islington made up from Samuel Rhodes (New School), Richard Cloudesley and the Bridge Schools won with victories in Kurling, football and Athletics and finished with 62 points, with Team Camden coming second and Westminster coming third. Teams Camden and Islington now qualify for the Central London Final in March.
Marianne, a staff member said, “Samuel Rhodes has never taken part in the Panathlon before, and some of the games they have only just started to learn – bringing in the coaching of Panathlon Sports in to our PE. What made an impression on them was meeting other pupils from the other schools and being a part of the Islington Team. They really enjoyed all the sports.
For me, as their PE teacher, I was proud of them all. They all gained so much and work so well with each other. The bus ride home to school was so noisy with all the excitement and when we got back they all raced off to the other teachers at school to show off their trophy. Thank you for such a wonderful day.”
