Nine schools and 70 competitors battled it out for the crowns of East London Primary and Secondary (Xtend) Finals at Harrow Lodge Sports Centre in Hornchurch last week – with schools from Newham coming out on top in both competitions.
All schools had qualified from earlier rounds and were now representing their London Boroughs in their respective finals.
On hand to deliver the day’s activities were two sets of volunteers: Young Leaders from Emerson Park Academy and Panathlon’s long-term supporters, the Woodland Group.
Courtney Mitchell, PE teacher at Emerson Park, reported the positive impact of the Panathlon leadership programme, explaining that 16 of their leaders had been trained by Panathlon in a Boccia only event, but have now gone on to deliver their own Primary SEND event locally which benefited 370 primary aged-children.
Working alongside the Panathlon Foundation has provided a valuable opportunity for students to put their leadership skills into practice while contributing to a high-profile sporting event, she said.
“We are exceptionally proud of the Year 8 leaders from Emerson Park Academy who are supporting the delivery of today’s Panathlon Multi-Sport Regional Final,” said Ms Mitchell. “Throughout the day, they demonstrated responsibility and excellent teamwork, helping to ensure the event ran smoothly for all participants. Experiences such as these play an important role in developing confidence, communication and leadership skills, while reinforcing the importance of inclusion and community engagement.”
The Woodland Group support Panathlon in so many ways, including volunteering their time to help officiate the competitions.
Jac Randhawa from Woodland Group said, “We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Panathlon for allowing us to support the amazing children who took part.
“Seeing the confidence, achievement, and joy on their faces throughout the day was a reminder of the valuable work that Panathlon continues to deliver.”
After a very tight competition, with the first three places decided by single points, St. Bons from Newham were victors, crowned East London Secondary (Xtend) champions.
In second place was Frances Bardsley Academy for Girls from Havering, and the teacher in charge was positively glowing about Panathlon, saying, “It is a fast paced and really awesome and exciting day! It has really made the girls believe in their own abilities and they have all had a hugely positive experience, building great team spirit!”
In the afternoon, the Primary Final took place, with Rosetta Primary becoming East London champions, ahead of Southwood from Dagenham in second and Drapers Brookside in third.
