Panathlon is very proud that Steve Brown, the Great Britain wheelchair rugby captain at the London 2012 Olympics, is a Panathlon Patron. Steve joins fellow Paralympians as patrons; Liz Johnson, Danny Crates, Louise Sugden and Helen Turner, after visiting many Panathlons across the South of England.

In 2016, Steve missed out through injury in his attempt to be selected for the Paralympics in Rio, but he was there in another guise as a TV host and presenter. This work has only increased in recent times.

Recently he has been seen on BBC’s Countryfile and Springwatch programmes and also a presenter of the Invictus Games in 2018 in Sydney.

Also very impressively, Steve was part of the six physically disabled people who travelled across Vietnam for the BBC1 TV series, Without Limits. Catch it on I-player here.

In 2015 he was a member of Team Panathlon at the London Triathlon, where he managed to complete a tough 20km hand-cycling section of the event in one hour two minutes, despite being a late addition to the team including other Patrons Liz Johnson and Danny Crates.

His other Panathlon appearances last year included the South London Finals in March, plus the London Finals and Kent Panathlon Finals in June.

“The atmosphere that Panathlon creates is awesome,” he said. “It’s nice to see everyone enjoying a competitive environment. These people play to win and it’s nice to see that attitude amongst them.”

Steve is especially pleased that Panathlon gives some young sportspeople the opportunity to compete in such an iconic venue as the Olympic Park.

“The Olympic Park is a phenomenal place and to be captain of the team at London 2012 is something that you can’t really put into words,” he said.

“It’s lovely to think that people at different levels of ability have the chance to experience something along those lines – of feeling proud, of feeling good about themselves – when Panathlon take their finals to the Copper Box.”
