The Valley Leadership Academy has always prioritised inclusion – but Panathlon has enabled them to take those efforts to the next level.

That’s according to school games organiser for Rossendale Nathan Bibby, who says that partnering with Panathlon over the last few years has enabled them to create opportunities for students with additional needs and disabilities to actively compete and represent their schools.

“Before Panathlon’s involvement, our programme mainly consisted of non-competitive inclusion festivals, but now, thanks to their support, we have been able to offer a performance pathway,” he says. “Pupils can compete for their school, representing Rossendale in county and North West championships, which has given them a new sense of pride and accomplishment.”

Nathan also says that Panathlon’s approach to events has enabled The Valley Leadership Academy to strengthen its connection with special schools and alternative provision schools, meaning they have been able to put together a clear framework for their own inclusion/SEND events, ensuring that every aspect is purposeful and truly inclusive.

He adds: “In addition to the events, Panathlon’s leadership and officiating training has been a game-changer for developing our young sports leaders. Their programme has equipped our students with valuable skills, empowering them to take on leadership roles in sports, both within and beyond our partnership.”

Rossendale has been part of a huge growth for Panathlon in the Lancashire area, with 2,028 young people getting involved in 2023/24 – 1,759 participants and 269 young leaders across 41 events including Ten Pin Bowling, Primary Panathlon , Panathlon Xtend, Boccia and Kurling across the county.

“Panathlon has made a tremendous difference to the lives of the children and young people in Rossendale, and we are deeply grateful for their continued support. Thank you for all that you do!” concludes Nathan.
