Rachael Hunt is finishing 2024 in a spectacular way!

She’ll be spending New Year’s Eve in the swimming pool as she looks to complete her challenge to swim one million metres this year – an average of 3km per day – to fundraise for Panathlon.

The idea for her challenge began when Rachael was having physio for an injury at Panathlon’s sponsors Carter and George (co-founded by Rhys Carter and England rugby union captain Jamie George). They told her about the Panathlon team taking part in the Swim Serpentine event in London’s Hyde Park.

Sadly, she was unable to take part due to injury – and it made her want to find another way to support Panathlon.

“I put it alongside my personal goal to swim one million metres in a year,” she says. “I went on a swimming camp in February, and a chap talked about how he linked his personal goal with a fundraising goal.

“This is not easy at all – it’s so relentless!”

And after daily swims plus a few incredible ultra events, one in Greece where she finished third in her category, she’s now hoping to reach her target by spending the last day of the year in the pool.

“My local pool are supporting me to do a single 10km swim – in swimming terms, that’s a marathon,” she explains. “My friends from the Bishops Stortford swimming club will help me make up the distance – in the lane next to me, the sprinters will do a relay of 33.3km.”
