South London Final

March 8th, 2017

The South London Final took place today at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre with 8 teams competing for 2 spots in the London final to be held at the Copper Box Arena on June 15th.

Sixteen schools and 162 competitors battled it out having previously qualified for this Final in earlier in the year.

The Champions half of the draw saw long time rivals Croydon and Bromley go head to head in many sports but this time it wasn’t just a two horse race as Lambeth stepped up their game and were victors in Polybat and came 2nd in Boccia, Kurling and Athletics.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAFurthermore Bexley did amazingly well and beat National finalists Croydon in Boccia winning a deserved gold. (pictured right)

However Croydon’s overall strength paid off with wins in Table Cricket, Kurling and Athletics to seal the victory and another trip to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on June 15th.

Fi Bell – the Croydon team co-ordinator said, “It’s fantastic to make it to the London Finals once again with a small and younger squad so we were pleasantly surprised we’ve made it once again. We’ll be training really hard throughout next term in order to try and improve on last years second place overall.”

We were delighted to welcome Hannah Celia and David Thomas from the Jack Petchey Foundation to witness today’s action. (Pictured top with the winning Croydon Table Cricket team)

Hannah said, “I always enjoy coming to the events, it is so inspiring to see young people participating in a range of activities and sports. It is also fantastic to see the young people enjoy the spirit of competition and sportsmanship. The young people are so supportive of one another despite being from different schools. Thank you for a fantastic day.”

The Young Leaders today were from Oasis Shirley Park & Harris Academy Crystal Palace who did a fantastic job in this high pressure final. Pictured here officiating Boccia.

In the Plate Final, both Lewisham and K&C went toe to toe sport by sport and ended up with the same score of 50 points overall, but Lewisham, qualified for the Plate Final at the Olympic Park by the narrowest of margins, on count-back, by winning 4 sports to K&C’s 2 wins overall.

Sharon a teaching assistant from Drumbeat School said, ” Lewisham had a very competitive team assembled for the Multisport Panathlon Plate finals this year and did very well in the competition winning Gold in several events. The students and staff are very excited to get through to the final at the Copper Box  Arena in June.”
