Panathlon were at Surrey Sports Park today for the Multi-Sport Panathlon Finals. Seventy-three competitors from 7 schools made up the teams; Ridgeway & Carew, West Hill & Gosden House, Portesbery & Pond Meadow and Freemantles.
The competition was close, particularly between Freemantles and West Hill & Gosden House teams only separated by 4 points. Congratulations to Freemantles (pictured above) who took the title and will represent Surrey in the South England Regional Finals next term. The full set of results can be viewed here.
Selwyn Walmsley, Carew Academy said, “It was an awesome day. I wasn’t sure how easy it would be to work with another school, and ensure that the students were all taking part and were where they were meant to be. In fact it worked really well and I think it added to the event that we were partnered with another school. A very big thank you.
There was 27 leaders from Broadwater and St Philips schools involved, who did a gerat job. One of them pictured right refereeing boccia.
Roger Trigger, Freemantes said, “Although our young people are, generally, more physically able than some of the others taking part it is worth noting just what a major achievement it is for a lot of them just to be in that busy, bustling environment and following instructions for a variety of games and activities. The students we bring are all ASD and most suffer from accompanying disabilities ranging from SLD through to chronic anxiety, so it is a real challenge to even be one of the team and be in the hall – let alone to take part.
They are youngsters who don’t often have the chance to succeed in any sort of competition so the look of joy on their faces was something I shall not forget. It was a great day and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Many thanks to you, your team and the many young helpers who made it possible for all of us to take part.”

This competition followed the Primary Competition, that we also hosted at Surrey Sports Park last month. A report of that event can be seen here.
