Ysgol Calon Lân are celebrating a “real success story” as they continue their Panathlon journey.
The special school – based in Swansea, south Wales – have been on the road to compete in both primary and secondary ten-pin bowling competitions, and more.
And PE teacher Dafydd Weaver reflects on a brilliant day out at Cardiff Met for a multi-skills event.
“We took pupils from our lower school, all aged under 11, who very rarely tolerate being in unfamiliar places,” says Mr Weaver. “They had a great day and we had some lovely messages from parents when they returned home with medals and certificates.
He adds: “Our groups enjoy travelling on buses so have not found the travel an issue. We enjoy meeting up with other schools as we have built a positive network amongst PE leads in ALN establishments.”
He is enthusiastic about the impact that Panathlon events can have on a group and a school more broadly.
“It has allowed our pupils who do not fit into the usual ‘Sporty’ category to take part in activities and events that they would rarely show interest in attending,” he says.
“The bowling competition was a high point for our pupils as they earned it as a reward for their good work in school.”
And for any schools wondering whether Panathlon events might be a good fit for them, he recommends: “Get involved as it provides our pupils with such a variety of activities it can be catered to anyone.”
